Sangkhla Buri

Nestled in the far west of Kanchanaburi province, Sangkhlaburi is an almost secret destination, still largely untouched by tourism. Surrounded by forested hills and set along the vast Vajiralongkorn Lake, this small town near the Burmese border exudes a peaceful, timeless atmosphere. Here, life moves to the gentle rhythm of the Mon community.

Sangkhlaburi is one of my best-kept secret destinations in Thailand. Just before dawn, Mon villagers light small wood fires to keep warm. If you wake up early, just before sunrise, you will witness a magical scene where the mist covers the lake and the glow of the fires creates an almost surreal atmosphere.

It is also at this moment that the monks pass by to receive alms. A moment of great beauty, and far more intimate than what you might experience in the larger cities.

Don’t miss the boat trip to explore the sunken city, as well as a visit to the village to discover local traditions. And above all, take time to unwind in this peaceful, timeless place.

What SEASON to go to Sangkhla Buri?

The best time to visit Sangkhlaburi is from November to March, during the dry season. The weather is mild, with misty mornings, perfect for watching the sunrise over the Mon Bridge, and sunny days, ideal for boat trips and cultural visits.

From June to October, the rainy season transforms the landscape: nature turns lush and green, and the lake level rises. While this period sees more frequent showers, it offers a quieter, more peaceful atmosphere, with fewer visitors.
