Ayutthaya
Ayutthaya, the former capital of the Kingdom of Siam, is a city where a thousand years of history come to life through its impressive ruins and temples. Nestled along the banks of the Chao Phraya River, it offers a journey back in time, with royal relics, pagodas, and lively markets. It’s an ideal destination for culture and archaeology enthusiasts who want to immerse themselves in the glorious past of Thailand.
Ayutthaya at a glance
In Ayutthaya, I always recommend travelers rent a bike directly from their hotel to explore the old city at their own pace. It is one of the best ways to soak in the atmosphere of this former royal capital, wandering through local markets, tasting regional specialties, and encountering temples and ruins steeped in history.
It is a fun and accessible activity for the whole family, even with young children. One of my favorite moments is boarding a small local ferry with the bikes to cross the river: in just a few minutes, you find yourself on the other side, in peaceful, authentic alleyways. A wonderful way to experience Ayutthaya differently, with curiosity and a sense of lighthearted discovery.
