Erzurum

Erzurum is a must-see destination in eastern Turkey, perched more than 1,900 meters above sea level on the Anatolian high plateaus. Between snow-covered mountains, Seljuk vestiges, and deeply rooted traditions, this city offers an authentic immersion into an Anatolia still preserved from mass tourism. It appeals equally to heritage enthusiasts and travelers seeking wide open spaces and snow-covered landscapes.

History or nature. Skiing on the slopes of Palandöken or wandering through medieval streets. Ancient Quranic schools with sculpted portals or endless plateaus stretching to the horizon. Erzurum ticks every box for a different kind of journey. Here are my must-see experiences while visiting:

  • wandering in front of the Çifte Minareli Medrese, a jewel of Seljuk architecture,

  • discovering the Üç Kümbetler complex, those conical tombs characteristic of the region,

  • skiing down the snowy slopes of Mount Palandöken, one of Turkey’s main ski resorts,

  • tasting cağ kebabı, the grilled meat specialty typical of Erzurum.

What SEASON to go to Erzurum?

Erzurum experiences a mountain climate with long, very snowy winters and short, pleasant summers. Summer (June to September) is the best period to discover the city and the landscapes of eastern Anatolia thanks to mild temperatures ideal for exploring the mountains, plateaus, and historical sites. Winter (December to March), meanwhile, attracts snow and winter sports enthusiasts, as Erzurum is one of Turkey’s main ski destinations. Whatever the season, the city captivates visitors with its authentic atmosphere and rich Seljuk heritage.
