Şanlıurfa

Şanlıurfa is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and a spiritual crossroads in south-eastern Türkiye. Nicknamed the “City of Prophets”, this pilgrimage destination is best known for Göbekli Tepe, the oldest known temple of humanity, a site that reshapes our understanding of the origins of civilisation. Between bazaar alleyways, historic mosques and the landscapes of the Mesopotamian plain, Şanlıurfa offers an off-the-beaten-track journey at the crossroads of religions.

Şanlıurfa at a glance

Quote

Şanlıurfa is a journey back in time. In the morning, stand before the 12,000-year-old pillars of Göbekli Tepe, then spend the afternoon wandering among the sacred carp of Balıklıgöl. Add to this one of the country’s most renowned cuisines and you have an intense and authentic destination. My highlights:

  • discover Göbekli Tepe, the oldest known monumental sanctuary,
  • feed the sacred carp of Balıklıgöl, the fish pond in the heart of the old town,
  • visit the Mevlid-i Halil Cave, believed to be the birthplace of Abraham, within the grounds of the Dergah Mosque,
  • get lost in the covered grand bazaar and try a pistachio coffee.

What SEASON to go to Şanlıurfa?

Şanlıurfa experiences very hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. Spring and autumn (April–May and September–November) are the best times to explore the city and the landscapes of Upper Mesopotamia, with pleasant temperatures ideal for visiting Göbekli Tepe, the bazaars and historic sites without suffering from the heat. Summer (June to September) remains very sunny, but temperatures often exceed 35 to 40°C, making it best to plan visits early in the morning or later in the evening. Winter (December to March) is mild and occasionally rainy, with snow being rare. Whatever the season, the city charms visitors with its authentic atmosphere and its unique spiritual and archaeological heritage.
