Sanlıurfa
Şanlıurfa is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and a spiritual crossroads in south-eastern Türkiye. Nicknamed the “City of Prophets”, this pilgrimage destination is best known for Göbekli Tepe, the oldest known temple of humanity, a site that reshapes our understanding of the origins of civilisation. Between bazaar alleyways, historic mosques and the landscapes of the Mesopotamian plain, Şanlıurfa offers an off-the-beaten-track journey at the crossroads of religions.
Sanlıurfa at a glance
Şanlıurfa is a journey back in time. In the morning, stand before the 12,000-year-old pillars of Göbekli Tepe, then spend the afternoon wandering among the sacred carp of Balıklıgöl. Add to this one of the country’s most renowned cuisines and you have an intense and authentic destination. My highlights:
- discover Göbekli Tepe, the oldest known monumental sanctuary,
- feed the sacred carp of Balıklıgöl, the fish pond in the heart of the old town,
- visit the Mevlid-i Halil Cave, believed to be the birthplace of Abraham, within the grounds of the Dergah Mosque,
- get lost in the covered grand bazaar and try a pistachio coffee.
