Trabzon

Trabzon is a must-see destination on Turkey’s eastern Black Sea coast, renowned for its spectacular scenery and lush nature. Nestled between the dark waters of the Black Sea and the snow-capped peaks of the Pontic Mountains, this region reveals breathtaking landscapes: valleys, high-altitude plateaus, waterfalls, and monasteries clinging to cliffsides. Trabzon is made for travelers seeking authenticity and Ottoman culture far from the beaten tourist paths.

Trabzon at a glance

Trabzon took me by surprise. I found one of the most captivating regions I have ever visited in Turkey there. What always comes back to me? The smell of the forests after the rain on the road to Sümela, a glass of steaming tea enjoyed facing the Black Sea, and that incredible silence on the high-altitude plateaus. My advice: do not stay for just one night. Give yourself time to explore the valleys, you will not regret it. My must-sees:

  • Climbing up to the Sümela Monastery to see this place suspended between sky and forest,

  • Taking the road through the high plateaus and stopping to drink a çay with locals,

  • Wandering through Trabzon’s bazaar and returning with your pockets full of hazelnuts and Pontic honey.

What SEASON to go to Trabzon?

Trabzon has a mild and humid climate, influenced by the Black Sea, with lush green landscapes. Spring (May to June) and summer (July to September) are the best periods to discover the region: temperatures are pleasant, the mountains are intensely green, and the surrounding plateaus offer spectacular scenery. Autumn also brings a beautiful atmosphere, with colorful forests and still-mild weather. Even in the rain, Trabzon retains all of its charm.
