Phi Ta Khon
Phi Ta Khon is a unique and colorful festival in northeastern Thailand, where locals dress as playful spirits in vibrant masks and costumes. Blending folklore, fun, and faith, it honors ancestral spirits and seeks blessings for health and prosperity. With its lively parades, music, and mystical atmosphere, Phi Ta Khon offers an unforgettable cultural experience!
Phi Ta Khon literally means “the spirits that follow the living.” This ghost festival, blending Buddhism and animist spirituality, is truly unique in Thailand. It is inspired by a legend from one of the Buddha’s previous lives, when he was the generous Prince Vessantara. According to the story, his return to the kingdom was so joyful that even the dead rose to celebrate.
To recreate this scene, locals dress up as spirits, wearing large wooden masks, often handmade and brightly painted, and parade through the streets in an atmosphere that is both mystical and festive.
