Songkran is above all a celebration of spiritual renewal, marking the transition from one year to the next through the symbolic act of purification. The word Songkran originates from the Sanskrit term saṃkrānti, meaning “change” or “transformation,” and refers to the sun’s movement into a new zodiac sign.

If the Thai New Year does not coincide with ours, it’s simply because Thailand follows a different calendar: the Buddhist one. This calendar starts 543 years before the Christian era, on the symbolic date of the Buddha’s entry into Parinirvana, the realm beyond death. So, what we call the year 2025 is actually the year 2568 in Thailand.
