Loy Krathong literally means “to float a krathong.” Krathongs are small handcrafted rafts, beautifully decorated with flowers, candles, and incense sticks. By placing their creation on the water, Thai people express their gratitude toward nature, and particularly toward Phra Mae Khongkha, the goddess of water.
This symbolic ritual represents letting go and spiritual renewal, and is often accompanied by wishes for serenity and good fortune.

While the celebration has animist roots linked to nature, it is also inspired by Buddhism. Many participants engage in prayers and offerings to Buddha, as a gesture of respect and a way to purify negative thoughts.
